THE KANSAS QSO PARTY

Thanks to the mobile stations & the one calls. Bob & the gang it was one of the best state qso party's I've been in! Great job Kansas.
KO7X
Tough sledding from the skip zone. Thunderstorm forced shutdown.

I worked KS0KS in the last half hour for 100 bonus point. It was a very enjoyable contest. Kansas has lots of good operators.
NSØR/NØR
Had a great time this year as N0R. Bands went from good to bad and then back again through-out the entire contest. I'm not a phone op, but I managed to try it out a bit for the contest. I live in town so, no real room for any great antennas. I have a 20 meter half square that got quite a workout this weekend though. Overall had a good time. Bob did a great job organizing the party, so many thanks to him.
KØWA/WØA
Need to get a new air conditioner for the shack. Dreadfully hot
KØOU
Too close to Kansas to work them on high bands they never went to 80m. Fun working friends and neighbors tho

Strange conditions with lots of QSB. Great fun as usual. Still couldn't crack K0BJ's last year totals although this year I had 5 mor mults. I spent most of Sunday searching for the last 5 Canadian sections (YT, NT, NL, NU, and PE) left to work. PE was the first one found when XO2C was found on 15 meters SSB at 1401Z. Then I heard my good friend VO1DD on 20 CW late in the oontest and managed to get NL. However, in the last 10 minutes of the contest VE8GER called in with NT. That was really satisfying after searching all day. This as close as I've ever come to a sweep in this contest.

It is nice to see so much DX participation. Many of the DX stations were worked on multiple bands and modes. Thanks to Uw2LL for a 40 meter CW QSO. Also, many thanks to Adu, ES1TU, for finding me on several bands.

Thanks to all who provided a QSO. Each QSO is very much appreciated.

A big thanks goes to Bob, W0BH, who has worked so tirelessly to make this QSO Party a success. And a success it was. Good job, Bob.

See you next year. 73,
Russ - K0N (K0VXU)
KC0DEB/K0L
It looks like a great crowd turned out this year looking for KS stations. Conditions did get kinda noisy at times (QRN), resulting in plenty requests for repeats. I appreciate everyone's patience, and things sure did get done! 20m was ;again; the workhorse, with 15m lagging as expected. On Sunday 15m did open up to Europe, where my meager signal apparently was heard OK. Last year there were comments about the lack of activity on PSK31, so I decided to spend some more time using that mode. The nice PSK QSO rate was a surprise, and I would like to thank everyone who called me!

This event is getting more and more popular every year, and I would like to thank the driving force behind it all: Bob W0BH, thank you for another great KSQP!

73,
John K0L / KC0DEB

Never did hear the bonus station. Needed one more "A" to spell Kansas. Did manage to spell "Sunflower" for the certificate. Never did hear "p", "T" or "Y" to spell QSOPARTY. All in all though a fun QSO Party. 100 watts into a G5RV up 20 foot. A fun QSO Party!
NØOFG/NØW
Personal Best for ksqp, rig used was Yaesu DT897D and Heathkit SB230 running 650 watts PEP into a Loops ans More HFV 21 made in Augusta, KS.

DX included Belgium X 2, Puerto Rico, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Ukraine (Kharkov, Eastern side where all the drama's occurring) and Mexico.
K5ZZR
Saturday I was able to get a few contacts but no luck on Sunday. Kansas is just too close to me for those bands to be very productive. Still fun and next year I'll have an 80 meter antenna to help out on increasing the number of contacts.... Russ K5ZZR

My 2nd favorite QSO Party after VaQP!
KØBJ/WØS
AMAZING short and long skip Saturday. Soft condx ~4-5th hours Sunday, but pretty good overall. Many thanks to organizer W0BH, all the mobiles, and the folks that chase us. As always, great fun to meet old friends and make, if briefly, new ones.
WN4AFP
Tough going for station with limited high band antennas... Managed to still work some KS stations. All of my contacts were with "1x1" calls. 73's Dave WN4AFP

Really enjoyed this QSO Party. Working K0A and N0A - Great Ops - Always great to work Bob and Lorna as they travel around. Sunday morning was a thrill as I still needed the "Y" suffix and wouldn't you know there was W0Y/N0Y/K0Y loud and clear on 20 meters. Managed to get the KANSAS SUNFLOWER QSOPARTY without the wild card KS0KS. The bonus points helped the score. 10 and 15 were lousy for us west coasters. Maybe next year .......

Well ! What can be said about this QSO party? Condx were way way down for me up here, but the mobiles made up for it with thrie gusto !

I have no idea how many Q's I made with Bob K0A or JErry W0L, but it surely must be dozens and dozens each. There were also other mobiles with a dozen or two Q's each. All did real well, but home stns a bit thin on the ground, hi !

Loved the 1x1's. Worked roughly 98% of them only missing K0O and N0T... 92/105 cty's worked, but I did not actively try to work all cty's...only all stns.

Unfortunately I was not able to put in a full blown effort, but I tried to do as much as I could between honey-do's, meals etc. A couple mishaps here, op error. Blew a fuse in the rig just as K0E signed STE(?)...lol....by the time I got it replaced he had vanished. Also, W0L was having a hard time hearing me in a certain cty through the pileup of EU's that persisted and would not stop calling, so I cranked the keyer speed up to 48wpm and made it on the first pass. Afterwards, I would call Jerry at 40-50wpm (depending) and always made it. Only one SSB Q's with W0L iirc.

So many mobiles were doing such a great job, so my apologies for only mentioning a few. N0A, N0U, W0Q....really, most of them are in my log many many times. My goal was 60k pts and/or 250 Q's. MAde the grade I'd say. All with an HF9V on the back of the shed and about 500W..... One iffy 10m Q's. If it doesn't survive log checking, oh well...I tried. Called many CQ's on 10 and scanned it pretty much every time I changed from 20-15---then 10,./ 73 de Mike VE9AA

Wow, what a Party! 1x1s everywhere, mobile and fixed. The CW mobile frequency assignments worked well again. Still a keeper.

Needed 13 counties after the break and all were scheduled for Sunday. Found them all but not without concern the last few hours when the bands took a nosedive. W0O/W0ZQ gave me three of the last four including the last one. TNX, Jon! My last four were BRO,ATC,LCN and DON.

As always the mobiles are a key part of any Party. I counted 14 mobile calls. Top mobile for me was K0A with 82 Qs followed by W0L(75), W0Q(43), N0A(41), N0K(34), N0U(29), W0O(26), W0E(24), N0P/K0Y(15), W0T(14), N0Q(9), W0R(8) and W0W(6).

Kudos to Bob, W0BH, for all his efforts in organizing another top notch Party. Thanks to the myriad of fixed stations as well. 73...

Thank you very much for really nice party a lot of mobiles with very good operators. It's a pity we don't have propagation on 40m I didn't heard even single sign. On 20m from the begining no possibility to work KS beacuse of EU noise. 15m was pretty good but not so many stations as on 20m. I thought maybe I will reach 100 different counties but finally I stopped at 96.

Sri for dupes but sometimes I wasn't sure about QSO cause of hvy EU QRM. Tnx for all QSO's to all stations operating from KS.
KU5B-K5YAA/WØL
Another good run in the Kansas QSO Party. We even had a brief 10 meter opening and 15 meters was terrific both days. Both bands were short on visitors. The ones that came had good signals. CW kept us busy both days but SSB on 20 was quite productive a number of times - that is when we could find a fairly clear frequency to run on. This year I had the pleasure of having Colin KU5B operate and drive with me. He impressed me with his skills on both modes especially SSB where he had some good runs going at times.

The Kansas QSO Party was great this year. Many members on the Ham Nation 40 Meter Post Show Net commented on it when they checked in Wednesday, Aug. 27. 20 Meters dropped out sunday in the early afternoon. Tried 40 Meters. Not a lot of activity there. Operated all but about 1 1/2 hours for dinner Saturday evening. I was happy with my increase from 66K last year to 110K points this year until I saw the 245K top score. Better than last year but looks like not good enough. How do they do it?
KN4Y
Plenty of 1X1 calls driving around the State on CW, but heard no 2X2 bonus station on CW. Missed 16 counties when I took the wife for lunch Saturday and I went to church Sunday. The QSO party was so exciting I missed three naps. This QSO party had the main ingredient, mobiles. A party is only a party until it is a Kansas party.
K4BAI
FT1000MP, Alpha 91b, 1 KW, TH6DXX, dipole, zepp, inverted vee. Good activity. Pretty good conditions on 20, fair on 40, OK on 80, but almost not activity there. Caught one KS station on 15 with a good signal. Must have just missed a good opening. Time was very limited this year, but a lot of fun. Thanks for all QSOs, particularly the mobiles. 73, John, K4BAI.
K7IA
Last year I spent more time and made more Q's and mults, but this year I had just as much fun! Unlike some of the more active state QSO Parties, the Kansas event is more laid back, witnessed by many ops who take time to ragchew a bit, making this event more of a party than a contest.

Had a great time in the Kansas QSO Party. This was my very first time in this particular QSO party, and I have to say, I really enjoyed myself. I like the idea of the 1x1 calls as multipliers to go along with the County multipliers. Many TNX too the op's that put the Counties on the air, and a special thanks goes out to the guys who were mobile(W0R, N0K, K0A and K0Y). Thanks to you guys and gals, I was able to work about half the state!! I am not sure, but I think that I spelled out Kansas, Sunflower, & QSO Party. That was a nice twist, looking forward to seeing the certificates with the ham radio postage stamps. Propagation was great on twenty on Saturday, and not so great on Sunday. I listened out on 40 for KSQP stations, but the ones that I did hear were very weak. Nothing as usual on 10 and 15 was full of DX. After working this QSO party, I have come to the conclusion that they are really fun and plan on becoming more active in the State QSO parties in the future. My next one is going to be the South Carolina QSO party, of which I hope to re-take the QRP first place award :) Rig: Yaesu FT-DX3000 Power: 5 watts Antenna: Home Brew 6 band Hex @ 20'

Found time to play despite working all weekend. One of my top 2 favorite QSO Parties (Washington's Salmon Run being the other)....Lots of stations on, wall to wall on 20M, and the mobile stations moved frequently to provide new mults. Lots of fun! Thanks!
KU7Y
Worked K0A for 1 bonus point QSO. Guess that makes the total 659 but no idea how to have 3830 add that. Fun to hear a few ops on CW. Thanks for the Q's. Ron, KU7Y

This has been a busy summer for me. My oldest son got married and that took up a lot of our energy, but I guess I had a little left over for the 2014 KSQP. This is my best score ever. I was hoping to get 900 q's and almost made 1000, so I'm really happy with the results.

I set a goal to try to work all 105 Kansas counties. I knew that winning would be next to impossible, since N6MU is hard to beat. Not only is he a good operator, but he knows everyone and they look for him in each new county. And he does it all using low power to a multi-band vertical in the back yard. Congrats also to NT2A for doing an outstanding job.

Had fun. It was great to hear so many ops running on 20. Out west we rarely hear 40 well enough from the east coast contests to make working a contest worthwhile, and that is where so many hang out. Thanks again for the fun!
NS5J
Operating time was limited. Always fun tracking & working the mobile stations. Thanks to everyone for another great Kansas Party!

Was late to the party!
KRØL/NØE
After having not worked this contest last year due to scheduling, it was good to be back this year as N0E. My goal for this year was simply to hand out N0E to anyone that needed it, so I spent the entire contest calling CQ and did not go chasing mults.

Moved back out to the farm where the noise level is MUCH lower and the improvement in my score is quite noticeable. I worked many stations right at the noise on my wire antennas so I was obviously getting out even at 100 Watts. Highlight was working UW7LL on CW, phone, and PSK31. Fabulous job by Yarik! I seem to recall one other station catching me on all three modes.

Wow what a hot qso party! Really! the hottest wx of summer so far! This was my 2nd year in KQP and upped the score by almost 50k! And solo! Sat. went smooth and as planned ,even got ahead one county on my sked. But Sun. was a stress test. Left the home QTH with a half-baked plan and at the first stop on the Linn-Bourbon line, good old murphy froze up N1MM while on 15m.

Only had a few minutes split between the shore station and then from the submarine. A lot of the stations I heard from the sub were already worked from the shore station. Operated off of a Canadian submarine. Sorry for the confusing call sign. Kevin

Hadn't been on the air much lately prior to KSQP. Thanks to Bob for inviting me to participate as a 1x1 Op (W0Y) this year. Had a total blast! It was exciting to be on the receiving end of a pile-up end a few times. Was not able to participate all day Saturday as planned, but made up for it on Sunday.

6 meters had a strong though limited footprint Es opening around 1700z Saturday. WF7I, K3KLC and NG2O were quite loud. Bert, WF7I in Virginia was 59 using just a M2 loop up 12 feet. I had planned to go out portable to Chase county, but it was way too hot. I worked Friday night, so tired as well and not up to fighting the heat. I operated from home in Douglas County. No HF antennas up - so on 10 meters I used a mag. mount whip on the BBQ grill. 10 was open! Logged K9NW and N8II with the whip. Mobiles should keep an eye on 10, as when open, signals are loud and those are easy Qs. For 20 and 40 meters I used the rain gutter on the side of the house. It worked surprisingly well and I was able to hand out Qs with it in the KQP including N6MU. Best DX with the gutter was KH6LC on 15 and KH6CE on 20. Also picked up W1AW/8 Ohio.
ABØS/NØS
Half time effort from W0NO's fine station. Enjoyed handing out many QSOs to many European stations.
OH6NIO
I was on and off on Saturday so I lost some counties but I was more active on Sunday and did not miss many available multipliers adding quite a bunch of new ones. Nice activity but the propagation was sometimes a bit tricky.

Once again great activity and fb signal from Jerry K5YAA as W0L (32 QSOs). The following stations were logged ten times or more: N0K, K0A, W0O, W0Q, N0A and N0U. Big thanks for all mobile stations for filling up my empty slots!

WØZQ/WØO
I had two visits from Murphy. The first occurred on Friday afternoon while driving down from Minneapolis. Somewhere in the middle of Iowa 20m sudden became very quiet, … was there a flare? Also, the tuner suddenly changed its settings. Hmm. Antenna problems. At the next rest stop I discovered that I had a dead short across the coax. I did bring along a second coax run so I switched out the feedline but to no avail, still a short. Hmmm. Well these things are just not that complicated so I detached the feedline from the antenna and measured right at the feedpoint and it still read a short. How can that be. Out came the wrenches and 3/8 to SO239 was disassembled. What I found was that the small star washer had physically moved and was shorting out between ground and the center feed through on the 3/8 to SO239 assembly. Some quick mechanical modifications with my Leatherman and it was good as new again. Better to find these things now than during the contest.

This was my first QSO party and I had a wonderful time. I enjoyed the QSOs and especially the pileups. I normally just rag chew but this has opened up another fun thing for Amateur Radio for me and my family. The kiddos helped me and made a few calls as well. Thanks to Bob for the coordination!!

Very limited time Sunday here in Johnson County after returning from Scout Camp operation yesterday in Miami County. Hope to put in a full effort next year. Thanks and 73 Bill, K0VBU

Hot! That was the operative word this year. As the 2014 KSQP got closer to kickoff, I keptlooking for those cooler temps we had the week before (and now the week after), but the weather reports kept saying 100+ temps. On Thursday evening, I decided to switch operations from the perfectly radio-tuned Astro van to the not-so-perfectly radio-tuned Mazda van with one major redeeming grace - air conditioning!

40m LSB was in great shape, but only a few were there ... 20m was strong. If you were west of 97 degrees West (from my location near St. Louis, MO) The 20m stations were best if running HIGH power ... W0N and I pulled off a 100 watt to 100 watt contact! Thanks, George! I always enjoy coming back to this contest! Thanks for the sponsors and for Bob/w0bh's mentorship.

It was great fun working operators from all over North America. This was my first year using digital and it was nice to give my voice a rest from time to time. A special thank you to Bob/w0bh who must spend hundreds of hours making sure that we all have a great time.
KN4Y
Best effort so far missed only 16 counties, operated CW and had a ball with the 1X1 mobiles. Did not hear the 2X2 bonus station on CW. Great party.

First KSQP. Propagation was not good to Kansas.
G3XVR
For once I wasn't on holiday in August and managed to pick up 30 new KS counties. Thanks to all the mobiles who struggled to hear my 100W to a low Hexbeam.
NØKOE
This is probably the best organized state qso party I have ever worked. A definite possibility to work all kansas counties. It took a great deal of planning and the effort shows. The number of active ks stations in the contest is a tribute to the local operators. Kudos to all concerned.
KØESU/KØE (Emporia State University)
The school category is a great opportunity to bring together students, faculty and alums for a radio contest. It was great fun to have so many stations looking for us during the contest, and we heard many nice comments from out-of-state operators about the contest. Thanks to Bob/w0bh for the many hours that he spent organizing the QSO Party.

Too hot to go out portable, so operated from home in Douglas county. A short, strong E-skip opening on 6 meters to VA, MD and NJ. WF7I in Virginia was 59 on his M2 loop up 12 feet. 10 also open, logged N8II and K9NW using a CB mag. mount whip on the BBQ grill. I only have a 6 meter antenna up at home. Used a rain gutter with tuner for 40, 20 & 15. Best DX KH6LC on 15 and KH6CE on 20 with 5 watts!

Thanks for another great KSQP. Since 2013 was my first KSQP after being off the air for 45 years I missed out on the 2010-11 & 12 certificates. That 2 cent Morse stamp reminds me of my stamp collecting days back in the 1940's and also makes me wish we could still send a QSL card for 2 cents like we did when I got my license in 1953!

Rig was FTdx5000 (100w) and Butternut HF6V vertical. What a blast. Thanks all especially Bob W0BH and his crew.

Due to 'issues' I only worked a few stations, hope you had a good QSOP! Mode was PSK31, 35 W, antenna was 300 OHM twin lead shorted into one side of a 4:1 BALUN tied to a 40 meter dipole up 20-25 feet and a 36 foot wire into the other side of the 4:1 up 2-5 feet from the ground. A MFJ Intellituner near the 4:1 matched the mismatch.
